Materials
Made To Last
Each sculpture begins
with an idea and a large chunk of oil based clay. This is a clay
that never dries, allowing me to work on a design for weeks or months
without worrying about the clay cracking or crumbling. But the
finished sculpture cannot be displayed this way. It must be molded
and cast into a more permanent material.
I do a tremendous
amount of research for each design, wanting to produce an accurate and
artistic portrayal of the beauty of each animal. Once a
sculpture is finished and a mold is made, it can be cast in a wide
variety of materials. I choose high quality materials that are
made to last. All of the castings are signed and numbered limited editions.
Cold Cast Bronze
Bronze powders are
mixed with resin and hardeners, and then applied to the surface of the
mold. This is backed with fiberglass and Forton mix to
create a relatively lightweight sculpture for wall hanging. The
bronze is colored in much the same way as hot bronze, with acid and
non-acid patinas, and sealed with protective coatings.
Bonded Marbleed Marble
Bonded Marble is an extremely durable
material often used for outdoor sculptures. This mix of Forton (
gypsum and resin ) is cast with fiberglass, creating a strong and
relatively lightweight relief sculpture. All of the pieces are
hand painted and sealed. Custom colors are available. These
are perfect for placing over the fireplace or in damp areas. The
Relief Sculptures may be mounted unframed or they may be framed in a
variety of styles.
Cast PaperPaper
Cast Paper has been used as a
sculpture medium for many years. I use 100% cotton fibers that
will not yellow with age. The fibers are pulped with water, using
the ancient Oriental technique of papermaking. This pulp is
carefully cast into the mold of my sculpture. After most of the
excess water is removed, the paper is left to dry completely in the mold
before removing. Once dry, I hand paint the backgrounds of most of
the sculptures using acrylic washes. The cast paper is museum
quality and should be framed to protect it from curious hands.
